NHPC planning Myanmar hydropower projects

NHPC Limited, India’s premier hydropower company and a ‘Mini Ratna’ Category-I Enterprise of the Government of India is preparing Detailed Project Report (DPR) for 1200 MW Htamanthi and 660 MW Shwezaye Hydro Power Projects on Chindwin River in Myanmar. In Myanmar a meeting took place on 26th July, 2011 at Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar between Department of Hydro Power Planning and Department of Hydro Power Implementation, Government of the Union of Myanmar (GoUM) and a team of senior officers from NHPC led by Shri A.B.L. Srivastava, Chairman and Managing Director, NHPC. A courtesy call was also made to Hon’ble U. Zaw Min, Minister, MOEP-I, GoUM, Myanmar. This confidence building measure of NHPC was to facilitate execution of work being carried out by NHPC in Myanmar.

Currently, NHPC has 14 operational power stations with a total installed capacity of 5295 MW. NHPC has commissioned the 14.1 MW Devighat Project in Nepal and 60 MW Kurichu Project in Bhutan on turnkey basis. The expertise of NHPC is being utilized in the area of hydropower development in countries like Myanmar, Bhutan and Tajikistan. The Company is expanding its international operations and is harnessing the hydropower potential available abroad. NHPC has been appointed as the “Engineering & Design Consultant” for the execution of 720 MW Mangdechhu HE Project in Bhutan. The Company has also been entrusted with the work of preparation of DPRs of 670 MW Chamkarchhu-I and 1800 MW Kuri-Gongri HE projects in Bhutan.

NHPC is actively pursuing development of hydropower potential in the states through Joint Ventures. A Joint Venture Company viz. “Loktak Downstream Hydroelectric Corporation Limited” has been incorporated for execution of the 66 MW Loktak Downstream Project in the state of Manipur. Another Joint Venture Company namely “Chenab Valley Power Projects Limited” has also been incorporated in association with JKPDC and PTC in the state of Jammu & Kashmir for taking up 3 projects totaling 2120 MW in Chenab river basin. Another JV company to implement 1500 MW Tipaimukh Hydroelectric (Multipurpose) Project with SJVN Limited and Govt. of Manipur is already under advance stage of incorporation. NHPC has also signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Orissa Hydro Power Ltd. (OHPC) and Government of Orissa for formation of a Joint Venture Company (JVC) with OHPC to develop three Hydroelectric Projects with a total capacity of 320 MW in Orissa.
