Shwe Project Stakeholders
Stakeholders, by definition, have a direct or indirect interest in the processes and outcomes of any development project.
In order to make
understanding the complexities of the Shwe Project a little easier,
we have organised Shwe stakeholders into three categories:
Governments: Burma, India, Bangladesh, and South Korea all have interests in this gas extraction. Please read our governments section for more information.
Corporations: Five
corporations--some governmental bodies and others privately held--have
direct and controlling interests in the outcome of the Shwe gas
project. Daewoo International
(South Korea), MOGE (Burma), ONGC Videsh Ltd. (India), the Gas Authority of
India, Ltd. (GAIL) (India), and the Korean Gas Corporation (KOGAS) (South
Korea) are--by their complicity in this project--directly linked to the
Burmese military regime and therefore opposed to the interests of the
people of Burma. For a full list of corporations who support the
Burmese military regime, please read the corporations section.
Peoples:
Because this project would use their land, the interests of the many
minority peoples of Chin
and Arakan State in
Western Burma, Bangladesh, and the Indian states of Tripura, Mizoram, and West Bengal, are vital. Check out
the peoples section to
learn more about the people involved and how they could be affected if
this project is allowed to go through.
